Classics Read in English _ Bluebeard; a musical fantasy by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin
With Bluebeard: A Musical Fantasy, Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin takes the chilling folk tale of the murderous husband and transforms it into a witty, operatic spectacle that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. Written in the early 20th century, this work masterfully blends the darkness of the original story with sharp satire and comedic flair.
At the heart of the tale is Fatima, a young bride who becomes Bluebeard's seventh wife. Enchanted by his mysterious charm, she willfully ignores the whispered warnings about his sinister past. Yet curiosity proves an irresistible force, and when she unlocks the one door forbidden to her, she confronts the horrifying truth of her predecessors' fate. What follows is a dramatic whirlwind of tension, humor, and redemption, as colorful characters like Sister Anne and the loyal Mustapha rush to save her from a grim destiny.
Wiggin uses this fantastical framework to deliver pointed commentary on marriage, ambition, and the power dynamics between men and women. Behind the laughter and theatrical spectacle lies a sharp examination of choices and consequences in love. The result is a work that entertains on the surface while challenging readers to reflect on the deeper complexities of human relationships.
