Hymn of Death for String Trio
This piece is inspired by the Korean drama Hymn of Death, based on a true story and set in the 1920s during the Japanese colonial period in Korea. It tells the tragic love story of Yoon Sim-deok, Korea’s first soprano, and Kim Woo-jin, a playwright. Despite her responsibility to support her impoverished family, Yoon Sim-deok refuses to sing for Japan. Kim Woo-jin, burdened by his duties as the eldest son and his desire to resist colonial rule, struggles to pursue his literary work against the harsh realities of the time. For both, their love becomes their only source of hope. Unable to endure their difficult lives, they decide to end their suffering together. On a ship returning to Korea from Japan, they leap into the sea, ending their lives. Before her death, Yoon Sim-deok records her last song, Hymn of Death, leaving behind a heartfelt expression of sorrow, despair, and love for her era. The story above is factual. However, the drama added a scene where they waltzed on the ship before taking their own lives, and this is where the idea of the waltz came from.
