Hannah Joy Yu, Ph.D., is an independent scholar, author, translator, and founder of HepNa Books Academy in South Korea. She received her Ph.D. in Religion from Claremont Graduate University, where her research focused on women’s leadership, authority formation, and gender dynamics in early Christianity, as well as the leadership experiences, identity formation, and religious authority of Korean immigrant women leaders in the United States.
Her scholarly interests include early Christian women, ascetic movements, Roman gender ideology, ecclesiastical authority, spiritual authority, and the historical processes through which women’s leadership became marginalized, distorted, or rendered invisible within Christian traditions. She is particularly interested in recovering overlooked voices from Christian history and examining the relationship between memory, power, and religious institutions.
In addition to her academic research, she works in publishing, translation, and educational content development. Her current projects include the Korean translation of Karen Jo Torjesen’s When Women Were Priests and the development of record-centered educational programs that connect historical reflection, personal storytelling, and community formation.
Selected publications and translation works include Reclaiming Women's Leadership in Early Christianity: Spiritual Authority, Spiritual Maturity, and Agency of Mary Magdalene, Macrina, and Melania the Younger, Breaking the Glass Box: A Korean Woman's Experiences of Conscientization and Spiritual Formation Wipf and Stock Publishers, USA, the care memoir When Care Arrived Unexpectedly, the spiritual reflections Unexpected Grace, her Korean co-translation of Lisa Isherwood’s The Fat Jesus, and her current Korean translation project of Karen Jo Torjesen’s When Women Were Priests.
Through her writing, research, translation, and publishing work, she seeks to stand at the edge, interpreting marginalized voices through historical analysis and creating spaces where overlooked stories can be remembered, shared, and reimagined.
