알렉상드르 뒤마 Alexandre Dumas, 1802~1870는 프랑스 문학사에서 대중의 사랑을 가장 뜨겁게 받은 작가로 손꼽힌다.

그는 나폴레옹 군의 장군이었던 아버지의 영향을 받아  파란만장한 삶을 살았지만 해박한 지식과 천부적인 상상력으로 파리 연극계에서 먼저 이름을 날리기 시작했다.  역사적 사실에 허구를 결합하는 능력이 탁월했던 그는 250여 편이 넘는 방대한 작품을 남겼다.
사후 132년만인 2002년, 프랑스 위인들의 전당 ‘팡테옹’에 안치 되면서 다시 한번 그 위대함을 인정받았다.
주요 작품으로는 <몬테크리스토 백작>, <삼총사>, <20년 후>, <브라즐론 자작>, <여왕 마르고> 등이 있다.
